Inverters and UPS are used by both households and offices to provide back-up power to electrical equipments in the event of a power outage. While the names inverters and UPS are used interchangeably in India, in strict technical terms an inverter is a device that converts DC (Direct Current) power into AC (Alternating current) power, while a UPS is a device that includes an inverter, battery charger and a battery (the UPS comes with an internal battery in some models). Given our need for back-power in India, a standalone inverter (that converts DC power to AC power) is obviously not very useful and we invariably need a device that is also equipped with a battery charger and hence, a UPS. Other terms used to describe these devices are Home inverters, Home UPS, Office inverters, Office UPS etc.
